claimとrevealとapparentlyの英語絵巻

今日は、

TOEICと英検に出てくる、この3つの単語についてイラスト付き単語帳を描きました。

最後の方に、単語の豆知識があるので、良かったら見てください(*^_^*)

claim（～だと主張する）

He claims that the stuff enables you to breathe in space.
その物質により、宇宙で息ができるようになると言っている。

The previous owner of the restaurant never revealed the secret ingredient in his tomato soup to anyone.
そのレストランの前オーナーは、トマトスープの隠し味を誰にも教えなかった。

Apparently, the winner of the drawing can ride on an elephant at the zoo.
どうやら抽選に当たったら、動物園で象に乗ることができるらしいよ。

通例、主張内容の真偽が定かではないことを意味する。
to state that something is true, even though it has not been proved

The company claims that their drug can make you thin without dieting.

和製英語の「クレーム」（苦情）は、英語ではcomplaintになる。

（知られていないこと）を明らかにする。
to make known something that was previously secret or unknown

Doctors are not allowed to reveal confidential information.

対義語 conceal

（確証はないが）たぶん、どうやら～らしい。
used to say that you have heard that something is true, although you are not completely sure about it

He didn’t come to the party, apparently, because of his wife’s illness.
彼はパーティーに来なかったが、どうも奥さんの病気のせいらしい。

「明らかに」の意味で使うことはまれ。

今日は、

TOEICや英検に出てくる、この3つの単語の英語絵巻をご覧いただきました。

形容詞のapparentが「明白な」や「明らかな」という意味なので、その副詞のapparentlyはもちろん「明らかに」という感じの意味だと思い込んでいました！（実際は上に書いたように「たぶん」という感じの意味）

英語学習の道は無限列車ですね・・・（最近、鬼滅の刃にハマっているので、いろんなことに「無限列車だね」と言ってしまいます・・・）←しかも無限列車編はまだ見ていませんよ・・・(*^_^*)
