不思議の国のアリスで前回、シロウサギの巣穴から落ち終わったアリス。
今回は、シロウサギの後を追っているうちに、扉が並んでいる細長いホールに入り込んでしまいます。
金色の小さな鍵を見つけ、小さな扉を開けてみるシーンまでのイラスト付き単語帳を描きました。
最後の方に、気になる単語の豆知識もあるので、良かったら見てください(*^_^*)
ランプに照らされた細長いホール
Alice was close behind the White Rabbit when she turned a corner, but it was no longer to be seen: she found herself in a long, low hall, which was lit up by a row of lamps hanging from the roof.
アリスはシロウサギのすぐ後ろについて角を曲がりましたが、ウサギの姿を見失いました。
気がつくと天井が低くて、細長いホールの中にいました。
一列に並んだランプが天井からぶら下がって、ホールを照らしていました。
ガラスのテーブルの上の小さな金色の鍵
There were doors all round the hall, but they were all locked.
Alice walked sadly, wondering how she was ever to get out again.
Suddenly she came upon a little three-legged table, all made of solid glass: there was nothing on it but a tiny golden key.
ホールには扉が並んでいましたが、どの扉にも鍵がかかっていました。
アリスはどうしたらまた外に出られるのかしらと、悲しい気持ちでとぼとぼと歩きました。
すると突然、小さな３本脚のテーブルがあることに気がつきました。
そのテーブルは一面ガラスでできていて、上にはちっちゃな金色の鍵がぽつんと置いてあるだけでした。
カーテンの後ろの小さな扉
The key would not open any of the doors of the hall.
However, on the second time round, Alice came upon a low curtain, and behind it was a little door about fifteen inches high: she tried the little golden key in the lock, and to her great delight it fitted!
その鍵ではホールのどの扉も開きませんでした。
でも、もう一度ホールを回ってみると、背の低いカーテンがかかっているところがあり、その後ろに高さ４０センチくらいの小さな扉がありました。
金色の鍵を鍵穴に差し込んでみると、良かった！ぴったり合ったのです。
扉の先の美しい庭
Alice opened the little door and found that it led into a small passage: she knelt down and looked along the passage into the loveliest garden you ever saw.
How she longed to get out of that dark hall, but she could not even get her head through the doorway.
アリスが扉を開けると、狭い通路に通じているのがわかりました。
這いつくばってのぞいてみると、その通路の先には今まで見たこともないような美しい庭が広がっていました。
アリスはこの暗いホールから抜け出したいと、どんなにか願ったことでしょう。
でも、扉の入り口は頭さえ通らなかったのです。
肩のない頭と望遠鏡のように縮む体
“Even if my head would go through,” thought poor Alice, “it would be of very little use without my shoulders.
Oh, how I wish I could shut up like a telescope!”
「もし頭が通り抜けたとしても、肩のない頭なんて何の役にも立たないわ。」
かわいそうに、アリスはこんなふうに考えました。
「ああ、望遠鏡みたいに縮むことができればいいのに！」
