仮定法の構文
仮定のwere to
were toは、“if A were to do ～”という形で「仮にAが～するようなことがあれば」という意味になり、仮定法過去で用いられ、非現実的または想像上の未来についての仮定を表します。
What would you take if you were to move out of the earth into outer space?
仮に地球を出て、宇宙に移り住むとしたら、何を持っていきますか。
if it were not for
- if it were not for A「もしAがなければ」（現在の事実に反した仮定）
- if it had not been for A「もしAがなかったならば」（過去の事実に反した仮定）
If it were not for Chimneys, Santa Claus would get arrested for breaking into houses.
もし煙突がなければ、サンタクロースは住居侵入で逮捕されるだろう。
ちなみに、but forは“if it were not for”または“if it had not been for”の意味で使うことができます。
But for a large lump on his cheek, he would look more handsome.
もし大きなこぶがなければ、彼はもっとハンサムに見えるだろうに。
as it were
as it wereは、as if it were soを短縮したもので、「いわば」という決まり文句になります。
Ramen is, as it were, a new type of hot drink.
ラーメンは、いわば新しいタイプのホットドリンクだ。
