DRINK MEと届かない金色の鍵の英語絵巻

不思議の国のアリスでは前回、アリスが金色の鍵で小さな扉を開けました。

扉の向こうに広がる美しい庭に行きたいのに、扉が小さすぎて通り抜けられませんでした。

今回は、不思議な瓶を見つけて扉を通れるくらいに小さくなれたのに、扉の鍵をテーブルの上に置き忘れてしまったシーンのイラスト付き単語帳を描きました。

最後の方に、単語の豆知識もあるので、見てもらえると嬉しいです(*^_^*)

わたしを飲んで

There seemed to be no use in waiting by the little door, so Alice went back to the table: this time she found a little bottle on it (“which certainly was not here before,” said Alice), and tied round the neck of the bottle was a paper label, with the words “DRINK ME” beautifully printed on it in large letters.
アリスは、小さな扉のそばにこのままいても仕方ないと思ったので、テーブルのところに戻りました。
今度はテーブルの上に小さな瓶が置いてありました。
（「さっきはこんなもの、絶対にここにはなかったわ」とアリスはつぶやきました）。
瓶の首には紙のラベルが結んでありました。
そのラベルには大きな文字で、「わたしを飲んで」ときれいに印刷されていました。

瓶の中身の味

The bottle was not marked “poison,” so Alice ventured to taste it, and, finding it very nice (it had, in fact, a sort of mixed flavour of cherry-tart, custard, pine-apple, roast turkey, toffy, and hot buttered toast), she very soon finished it off.
瓶には「毒」とは書いていなかったので、アリスは思いきって口をつけてみました。
すると、とても美味しいではありませんか。
（それは、サクランボのタルトと、プリンと、パイナップルと、七面鳥のローストと、タフィーと、そしてあつあつのバタートーストを一緒にしたような味でした）。
アリスは、あっという間に飲み干してしまいました。

縮んだ体

“What a curious feeling!” said Alice.
“I must be shutting up like a telescope!”
And so it was indeed: she was now only ten inches high, and her face brightened up at the thought that she was now the right size for going through the little door into that lovely garden.
「なんだか不思議な感じがするわ！」アリスは言いました。
「きっと体が望遠鏡みたいに縮んでいるんだわ！」
まったくそのとおりでした。
もう２５センチくらいの背の高さになってしまいました。
アリスは顔を輝かせました。
今だったら小さな扉を通り抜けて、あの美しい庭に入っていくのにちょどぴったりの大きさになったと思ったからです。

忘れてきた金色の鍵

Alice decided on going into the garden at once; but, alas for poor Alice! when she got to the door, she found she had forgotten the little golden key, and when she went back to the table for it, she found she could not possibly reach it.
アリスは、すぐにあの美しい庭に行ってみることにしました。
でも、ああ、かわいそうなアリス！扉のところに行ってみると、あのちっちゃな金色の鍵を忘れてきたことに気がついたのです。
鍵を取りにテーブルに戻ってみると、鍵にはとうてい手が届きそうにありませんでした。

泣き出すアリス

Alice could see the little golden key quite plainly through the glass and she tried her best to climb up one of the legs of the table, but it was too slippery; and when she had tired herself out with trying, the poor little thing sat down and cried.
透き通ったガラスを通して、ちっちゃな金色の鍵がはっきりと見えました。
アリスはテーブルの脚を一生懸命よじ登ろうとしましたが、ツルツル滑って登れません。
何度も頑張ってみましたが、くたびれ果ててしまい、かわいそうに、座り込んで泣き出してしまいました。

単語の豆知識

There is no use (in) doing

There is no use (in) doing = It is no use doing（～しても無駄である）

It is no use crying over spilt milk.
こぼれた牛乳を嘆いても仕方がない。
（「覆水盆に返らず」）。

この意味では物事に使われ、人に用いると「好奇心のある」という意味になる。
