今日は、集合名詞についての英語絵巻を描きました。
集合名詞の用法は２種類あります。
１，a family、two familiesというように、団体を１単位として普通名詞扱いする用法。
I grew up in a family of four.
４人家族の中で育った。
Most of guests are families and couples.
客のほとんどは家族連れと夫婦や恋人同士だ。
２，family=family members（複数形）というように、団体の一人ひとりを意識するときは、単数形でも複数扱いします。
My family are all music-lovers.
家族みんな音楽が好きだ。
この２つを頭に入れながら、イラスト付き単語帳を見てください。
最後の方に、集合名詞のthe public、the police、peopleについて説明を載せたので、見てもらえるとありがたいです(^_^)v
a family（家族）
This house isn’t big enough for a family of seven.
この家は、７人家族が住むには十分な広さではない。
the public（民間人）
Police warned members of the public not to approach the man, who may be armed.
警察は民間人に、武器を持っているかもしれないので、その男に近づかないように警告した。
the crew（乗組員）
He joined the crew of a large fishing boat.
彼は大型漁船の乗組員の一員になった。
the public, the police, peopleの説明
the public（大衆）
単数扱いが多い。
I think the public is comfortable with the result.
大衆はその結果に満足していると思う。
the police（警察）
複数扱い。
The police are faced with a challenging case.
警察は難事件に直面している。
× The police is…としない。
police・・・警察官（人）
Police surrounded the courthouse.
the police・・・警察（組織）
The police are investigating the case.
people（国民）
国民を１単位として見るので、普通名詞扱い。
The Americans and the British are two major English-speaking peoples.
people（人々）
一人ひとりを意識するので、単数形だけど複数扱い。
How many people were at the meeting?
